Art-Tastic Tuesday: “Airship” by Rias Coast

Airship_cropClick here for the full, uncropped image! On Tuesdays I feature a selected piece of visual art that I have come across. These are pieces that have inspired my writing or beautifully frame some concept or another that I have already written or want to write about. I present them without commentary so they may inspire you without the burden of my perspective, but if you are ever curious as to why any particular piece is special to me, please drop a comment! Pictures have links to the artists’ blog or website if at all possible.

    1. Glad you like it Claire! :-) To answer your question I’ll start by saying that I’m a bit of a historian in addition to being a dreamer. I love Victorian fantasy and science fiction, like the works of H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I’m definitely into retro-technology and alternate history, and although I don’t consider myself a hardcore “Steampunk” guy, I do like a lot of what I find in that genre.

Hayao Miyazaki’s “Castle in the Sky” is one of my favorite films of all time, and it’s a work that really inspires me. If you like this picture and have never seen that film, go get yourself a copy and watch it… You won’t regret it! Its sweeping, yet simple story of airships and adventure put the seeds for a tale of my own long ago in my heart.

That story is still growing, and for the past few years I’ve been joining forces with a dear friend and creative partner whose dreams mixed with mine to birth something very unique; a tale that we feel will be quite spectacular once it’s fully forged! Two of the things that this story features are airships and impossible Victorian anti-gravity. Therefor we keep a scrapbook of things just like this to inspire the design of the airships within our setting.

      1. Awesome! That movie is on the list to watch! I’m working on a “sci-fi” story right now that uses an airship. It’s been quite fun to write and I love seeing pictures like this!
Thanks for the reply! Good luck with your story. Your brief description already sounds exciting! :)

      2. And good luck with your story as well! If you’d like more fodder for you watch list featuring airships, I highly recommend the anime series “Last Exile” as well. Really good show that sucked me right in.
