Flash Fiction: Sideshow

His new gills breathed, but water muted his cries for help. Legs now gone — withered to fins on the fish tail past his navel — the glass tank was a prison.

He looked to the river mermaid. They’d said she’d killed carnies. But her eyes to his, said sadness.
