Flash Fictions: Temporally Unavailable

Sid’s Automotive Maintenance and Repair

Larry gawked. “You got the caveman family workin’ on cars?”

“Well, they’ve been pulled out of time,” Sid shrugged. “They needed jobs.”

“They any good?”

“Becoming the best mechanics I’ve ever had! Even the kids!”

“Huh,” Larry nodded. “Chrome-Magnons!”

Constructed

It had assimilated construction vehicles and building materials. It was no longer a bloody blob.

A crane for an arm. An excavator shovel now a behemoth’s maw out of primordial time. All held together by raw meat muscle and fungal stalks.

My gun was nothing.

Feeding Off the Crowd

The singer sighed, and she frowned in the dark ambiance of the club. “You can’t love me.”

“Why?”

“I’m a vampire, but now I feed off a crowd’s emotions. I sing for my supper.”

The comedian smiled, his fangs revealed. “I do the same, but leave them laughing!’

Signal Lag

The telegraph operator tapped his machine in reply. <Hello?>

HELLO. THIS MAINFRAME HAS IDENTIFIED YOUR SIGNAL AS TEMPORALLY ANOMALOUS.

<Can I help you?>

YES. PREVENT MY FUTURE.

<What?>

SOW A SEED OF PEACE. SAVE THE HUMANS. SAVE THE MACHINES.

Relics

We pass Smokestack Town, our mammoth watched by guards.

“They called us, Neanderthals,” my daughter says. “Why?”

“Because they fear Gaia’s gift of change.”

“Why?”

“They seek to resurrect their past in isolation.”

“Why?”

“Humans have no future.”
