Flash Fiction: Shell Shocked

Matilda and Bert burst into the henhouse. With both ice and fire chickens scattering in a calamitous commotion of clucks, the children armed themselves as the trolls smashed their way through ramshackle coop walls.

The kids took aim, then unleashed a relentless counter-attack of lobbed elemental eggs.

Pelted and beaned with yolks that froze into ice— or became blazing omelets — one hairy brute staggered blinded by a mask of icicles, and another fled with a flaming behind.
