Reblogged this on Kate McClelland and commented:
I love the fact that trees are growing out of the roof. Can you imagine what it looks like inside? Warm and dark with the scent of pine, herbs and smoke from the stone ringed fire in the centre of the ground floor from which the heat rises and warms the whole haystack of a house. The upper floors lit by pencils of sunlight leaking through the pine needles during the day and hundreds of glow worms of a night

I love this picture, it feels safe, a place to hide from trouble or just to sneak in and sleep beside the trees. It feels like a haven and the witch is one who takes in waifs and strays when they need protection and healing.

What I love about the picture is its subtle supernatural tone and ambiguity. It is a place that is outside the norm, but is it a good place? A bad place? The figure is traditionally dressed, but is she wicked, or kind? A wise healer or vile presence? We don’t know and the picture lets us tell our own story with it. :-)
I know many kind witches, so my notions gravitate towards yours… But Baba Yaga also lurks…
