Flash Fiction: Under the Rug

The dog is obsessed with the throw rug. Scratches it. Moves it. Sits and whines.

I roll it up. He paces the hardwood beneath it.

Prying floorboards, I expect a rat’s nest.

I find slithering black sludge and unblinking eyes.

Tendrils lash.

The dog whines.
