Flash Fiction: In the Box

The old tree is uprooted after the hurricane. In torn earth where it once stood, I find a broken circle of blue azurite stones.

A lead box is half-buried at its center.

I open it. Dry eyes flick wide.

Free,” the mummified head whispers to me. “At last.
