Flash Fiction: A School for Gifted Youngsters

“Father beats me,” she cries. “I see visions. I create fire.”

He places his coat over her shivering shoulders. “I’ll protect you.”

“Don’t worry,” Thumbelina says poking out of the coat’s breast pocket. “Mister Andersen is a good man teaching special children with powers, like us!”

The little match girl takes his hand. “Why?”

“To save the world,” he answers.
