Homecoming

“Are you the beast that devoured my daughter?”

“No,” the young dragon says. “Her offspring.”

The old peasant woman nearly falls. “You talk? With her voice?”

“With her soul and mind,” she answered. “There was death and pain, but Mother… I still live.”
