The Bargain

I inherit Father’s boat, but I’m not the great fisherman he was.

Yet the mermaids mistake me for him on the sea.

“Tribute!” they demand. “For a year of good fishing, toss a child for feasting!”

“What?” I ask.

“Our bargain! It’s been your agreement for decades!”
