The Burden

She looks at my ring. “Where did it come from?”

“I found it in my begging bowl, and never saw who put it in.”

“Why would someone part with eternal health and youth?”

“Immortality,” I answer, “becomes a heavy burden.”

“Are you, parting with it too?”

“Not yet.”
