Time for a new weekly writer’s roundup of my works-in-progress and those ready to read!
Yesterday was one crazy day! You know the type… a million things happening simultaneously at work keeping you away from the half-a-million other things that you actually want to do. Unfortunately, a timely WIP-it update fell to the side as a result. But hey, now you get a two posts from me this Thursday, so how about that? ;-)
Missed self-imposed deadlines aside, the past week hasn’t been a bad one for my works-in-progress! I was able to spend a lot of time working on my short story / potential novelette The Brynesmark over the holiday weekend. It’s the pirate tale that I initially started in August for a contest but was unable to complete in time because of the pressing life events going on around me then. Returning to it really feels good!
I revised and expanded the first two-thirds of the story, finding a lot of things that were rough and disjointed in the prose to be fixed. When starting The Brynesmark I was rushing to finish it and beat a deadline while being pretty stressed because of the sudden change in my living situation and moving. You can guess how that affected my prose. Some things were very uneven and jolting, and in other places I skimmed over details and ideas that were gems that I needed to make shine instead.
Now that I’ve given it some TLC and at least a thousand more words in the first half of the story, its pace is much better. The current draft is at eight thousand words and I’ve yet to write the climax, but I’m really happy with what I have! Somehow I think I’ve stumbled into a very classic pirate-story kind of vibe, like Treasure Island, but it still feels like my writing. Right now, I’ve got a story with kidnapped orphans, murderous seamen, treasure maps, wizards, monsters, notorious buccaneers… Oh yes! …And swordfighting!
Hopefully, The Brynesmark will turn out as exciting as I think it is when others read the finished product. It might still be awhile before it’s ready though… In my new job as a FantasyWriters moderator on Reddit, one power that I have gained is helping to choose the prompt subjects for the monthly writing challenges that we run. This month is the first time one of my ideas will be given a spin. :-) I think it will produce some cool stories when it’s posted later this week! Working on the prompt, I came up with a story idea myself that got me excited, so I’m going to try and write it up to share in the contest and then on Aethereal Engines.
Given that December is a busy month with lots of events and gatherings that will be eating away at my time as it is, I’m going to stay focused on the story for the contest this month. I’ll jump back into The Brynesmark in full force to start the New Year!
Alright, time for me to stop blogging and get back to writing some more fiction! Take care!
